SUMMARY:United Nations Global Road Safety Week
DESCRIPTION:United Nations Global Road Safety Week\nRequested by the United Nations General Assembly\, the 4th United Nations Global Road Safety Week will be held annually from May 8 to 14. \n  \nSustainable Development Goals\nIn September 2015\, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these SDGs are completed\, it would mean an end to extreme poverty\, inequality and climate change by 2030. A specific stand-alone target (3.6) in the Health Goal to reduce road traffic fatalities was adopted: \n\nBy 2020\, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents.” \n\nOur governments have set a very ambitious target to save lives on our roads\, and it’s our job to make sure they stick to it. \nThe #SlowDown campaign calls for urgent action around speed management to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries. The road safety target within the SDGs is only going to work if we hold our governments accountable. \nDecade of action\nThe #SlowDown campaign operates on the principles of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020. \nOn 11 May 2011\, dozens of countries around the world kicked off the first global Decade of Action. From New Zealand to Mexico and the Russian Federation to South Africa\, governments committed to taking new steps to save lives on their roads. The Decade of Action seeks to prevent road traffic deaths and injuries which experts project will take the lives of 1.9 million people annually by 2020. \nThe Global Plan for the Decade of Action outlines steps towards improving the safety of roads and vehicles; enhancing emergency services; and building up road safety management generally. It also calls for increased legislation and enforcement on speeding. \nUnited Nations Global Road Safety Collaboration\nThe United Nations Global Road Safety Week and its’ campaigns are coordinated by the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration\, chaired by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. \nAll stakeholders – national and local governments\, international agencies\, civil society organizations\, private companies\, and the public generally – are invited to plan and host events marking the week.

SUMMARY:UN Global Road Safety Week 2023
DESCRIPTION:The UN General Assembly mandates the WHO and the UN regional commissions to plan and host periodic UN Global Road Safety Weeks.  \nThe 7th UN Global Road Safety Week will take this year from 15-21 May. The theme is sustainable transport\, and specifically the need for governments to facilitate a shift to walking\, cycling and using public transport. Road safety is both a prerequisite for this shift to happen and an outcome of it. The slogan is #RethinkMobility. \nkey messages of the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week: \n\nGovernments and their partners need to rethink mobility – this includes investing in walking\, cycling and using public transport\, which can promote equity and health for people and the planet.\nSafety must be at the core of efforts to reimagine mobility – this puts road safety at the core for all road users.\nThus road networks must be designed with the most-at-risk in mind – children\, adolescents\, persons with disabilities\, pedestrians\, cyclists\, and users of public transport.\nWalking and cycling\, when safe\, contributes to people’s health and makes cities sustainable and societies equitable.\nSafe\, affordable\, accessible and sustainable public transport solves many of society’s ill.\n\nThere will be more information on this event soon.
